I'm more of a basketball guy and maybe I missed something but what is hockey doing for NIL. Is there a group that has raised money like hoops and soccer? Doesn't seem like I've heard much about any hockey fundraising.
Hockey has produced more real NHL/professional sports people than any other sport at the school by a significant margin, a few that have made real contracts- but how much they give back to the school/program I have no idea

Outside of the pockets of Clarkson and St. Lawrence alums in the Burlington area who would show up for those conference games (and still do when they play one another in the non-conference regularly), there is no point in moving into ECAC, certainly not from a cost standpoint; the HEA affiliation is financially much better for UVM. UVM is exactly where it needs to be institutionally and competitively; it just has to start acting like it again, which is to say, just show some baseline competency in the running of the sport, please. It "isn't working" because of self-inflicted errors by an athletic administration that allowed things to get as bad as they possibly could get on the coaching front, and then hired someone without doing their homework on the type of person they were off the ice and who in all honesty was a bad fit for college with hindsight being 20/20 (he had no sense of building a roster/team identity, did a poor job recruiting and couldn't even bring in good international guys which was his calling card). All this has led to a decade-plus of disarray, and we're left hoping that the current coach, who by no means was prepared to be a Hockey East-level head coach and thrust into a challenging situation, is able to find his way.

That's not even mentioning how tolerating a bad product led to the complete collapse of demand for tickets, which now do not offer much value for their sticker price, along with the bungling of the entire facilities project, leaving Gutterson quite unpleasant to navigate. Nearly all of this could have been avoided with bolder, better decision-makers. The league is not the issue here. In fact, it's in UVM's strength. All you have to do in Hockey East now is finish in 6th, and you can make the tourney. Is UVM really not capable of doing that every 3-4 years on average while not completely bottoming out the rest of the time? If in a 4-year cycle we saw 8th, 5th, 9th, 7th with 1 NCAA bid, sign me up. I'd tolerate an 11th place finish right after that if there was belief that 11th turned into 8-9th, then 6th and the team generally followed that trend.

That standard, which is an acceptable one for a vast majority of the fan base, absolutely can work and is not asking for much from an expectations standpoint and historical standpoint, given where the program's history has been. Anyway, that's an earnest response. Take from it what you want. I think regardless of your level of caring for the hockey program, everyone should be onboard with expecting more from what we're getting and not chalk it up to "go to a different league" or be completely indifferent. Indifference to any program not being at least competitive is a good way for this leadership to manufacture all kinds of excuses for when the programs you like and support with more vigor start to take a downturn.

It seems like/sounds like….UVM would be just as bad/inept in ECAC, so may as well stay in HE.

Mike McMahon from CHN/his hockey substack ranked UVM 35th in his preseason power rankings. That's out of 63 teams, and it's 10th in HEA. He has UNH at 11th. Right above UVM he has Cornell, who is traditionally an ECAC power, but does lose a lot. He slots them in for 5th in ECAC. That should speak pretty clearly to how good Hockey East is, and what baseline competency with the hockey program itself could yield (being a top 20 team nationally etc.)

Anyway, his preview is fair I think:

Vermont feels like a program on the verge of pushing into the middle tier of Hockey East after six seasons spent stuck near the bottom of the league standings. But what do they need to get there?
The Catamounts need players to step up and stabilize the middle of their lineup at both forward and defense. The talent is there at the top of the depth chart, but increased production from the middle group is essential if they’re going to make a move.

On defense, Sebastian Törnqvist and Jax Wismer provide reliable options at the top of the D-corps, with freshman Caeden Herrington (a Los Angeles Kings draft pick) and Dylan Gratton right behind them.

That’s a solid top-four.

Up front, Vermont boasts a strong top with Max Strand, Colin Kessler, and freshman Cedrick Guindon (a Montreal Canadiens pick), who looks poised to claim a top role immediately.

The Catamounts simply need more secondary scoring to take the next step. That could come from freshmen such as Zach Filak or Jonah Aegerter, or it might depend on veterans like Jens Richards and Massimo Lombardi finding another level.

Goaltending has some proving to do as well. Vermont posted an .884 team save percentage last season, and while starter Axel Mangbo returns, that number must improve for the Catamounts to rise in the standings. I have Vermont ranked No. 23 in goaltending in part because of their depth — freshmen Jacob Oster and Aiden Wright both seem capable of playing right away. There will be a lot of competition in that room.

Bold Prediction: Jacob Oster will be the starter by Thanksgiving
Oster arrives with a strong pedigree and ideal size for the position at 6-foot-3 and 195 pounds. He enjoyed a productive OHL career, appearing in 196 games over four seasons. Across his final two years, he posted a .905 save percentage, ranking eighth in the league last season. I don’t expect the Vermont staff to just hand him the job, but he has the tools to win it.
"

I don't think that's really a bold prediction, because unless Mangbo turns it on to another level, it's pretty clear Oster and Wright can take the job from him. Exhibition game against Brock from Canada is this Saturday, followed by St Lawrence next Friday.
