I don't remember the sport but a few years back someone was traded and refused to go so the trade didn't happen.
Is this possible in the NBA?

Anyone can refuse to go anywhere is they want to forego their salary. For some people who are very rich this doesn't seem like a big deal. It's the reason why in hockey sometimes you have seen guys hold out for a different contract by sitting out for a season or less.
People in the NBA could do the same thing.
I would like to see someone get sued for breach of contract one of these times when a situation like that arises.

No a player cannot. The team and league can fine the player. A few years back as part of a 3 way deal the Bulls got John Starks and he didnt want to play for the Bulls. The LEague and Team fined him, and over in Utah he had to take a minumum contract as a punishment.

So you can refuse as long as you take a hit on your salary?

Some players mainly superstars have a No trade agreement in there contract meaning they could only be traded with the trade going through the player. I know Karl malone had it in his.
David Robinson, John Stockton and Horace Grant were the only other players other than Malone who had no trade clauses. Currently noone has a no trade clause. Malone is a free agent and the other retired. I don't remember the exacts but you have to have played so many yeras in the league and so many with the same team.
